E is for Explicit Social Skills

"We know what skills will help us communicate and succeed in school and life!"

To Ensure Explicit Social Skills, ask yourself:

  • “What skills do students need to make this activity feel good and be successful?”
“How can the students best reflect on the skills they are using and practicing?”

Explicit Social Skills is:

Explicit Social Skills require the teacher and students to take a few moments in every cooperative learning activity to preview necessary social skills, review how they are doing with them in the middle of the activity, and reflect on their use at the end.

Most kids simply can't be successful teammates if they aren't explicitly taught the social skills necessary to work in a group.  They never learned it or they never needed to learn it.  But the basic social skills of personal and interpersonal communication, leadership, cooperation, and presentations need explicit guidance and practice in order to teach the whole child.
